Birds in Paradise
August 25, 2018 – October 21, 2018
“Birds in Paradise,” a magnificently atmospheric, dizzy harmonic track by Jacolby Satterwhite, Patricia Satterwhite (his mother who was also an artist), and Nick Weiss of the electronic music duo Teengirl Fantasy. Over the course of her life, Patricia recorded numerous albums at home with a Kmart cassette tape player and made over 10,000 drawings in Columbia, South Carolina. Her songs are rich, hypnotic compositions, deeply steeped in Southern R&B and Gospel songs. Patricia’s voice seems pleasurably distant, a dream climbing up past the clouds. With an archive of 155 a capella tracks, Jacolby and Nick co-produced an album commissioned by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which stitch together Patricia’s vocals and Nick’s washed-out club synths. Reimagining these tracks feels intimate, a tribute to an artist and a mother, a peek behind a devastatingly loving the family curtain.

Bio
Jacolby Satterwhite
Jacolby Satterwhite (b. 1984) uses video, 3D animation, performance, and traditional drawing to create dreamlike virtual universes. Videos of Satterwhite dancing, digital versions of his mother’s drawings, and home videos are combined to create a sci-fi surrealist experience that explores overarching themes of identity, family and queerness. Satterwhite was born in Columbia, South Carolina and now works out of New York.
