Wilay Méndez Páez

Notes from the Underground

September 18, 2021 – January 9, 2022

Inspired by the architecture of the Chute Space, Notes from the Underground illustrates how Cuban-born artist Wilay Méndez Páez utilizes a dark, formerly industrialized basement as fertile ground for imagining. The artist transforms recently drafted works from his notebook into sculptural forms composed of metal debris and cast-off materials from an Atlanta junkyard. His most recent metallic experiment consists of architectural forms that serve as a statement about dystopic realities as well as the possibility of resurrecting decaying urban environments.

Wilay Méndez Páez is currently an artist-in-residence at Clark Atlanta University Art Museum (CAUAM). Notes from the Underground complements his CAUAM show Wilay Méndez Páez: Portals to a New World, which will be on view until December 15, 2021.
