All the Moving Parts
In 2023, choreographer Claudia Schreier and clothing designer Abigail Dupree-Polston contacted Hamidullah to help design the set and clothing fabrics for 2024 Atlanta Ballet’s Nighthawks. This jazz ballet composed by Wynton Marsalis had intentions to stir up conversation with impactful art, powerful movement, and compelling design. Marsalis’ “The Jungle” was about living in New York City but I was prompted to tell the story of living in Atlanta through my lens.
My intentions were to illustrate the journeys, like the making of this ballet, that are often untold or overlooked within the city of Atlanta - or any city in fact - while highlighting the dreamer and child in all of us that inspire the culture which keeps our communities alive.
Soon the art of collage began to occur in many facets. From the photography of Atlanta inhabitants by Jamani Chavis and Charity Hamidullah, to a film of the process by Andrew Thomas-Clifton, digital manipulation to painting, textiles to hand stitching, dance to design. All the moving parts began to come together like the fabric of life. Sewn and connected like community quilts or garments of clothing adorned with patterns of identity, impression, connection and growth for us to water proudly.
