The Bed Series

I work with pieces of antique beds to engage with the layers of history embedded in these objects, which are related to intimacy, vulnerability, relationships, and trust. I use words on furniture, including headboards and bed frames, to explore the process of deconstruction and rebuilding of the self. The words come from a personal journaling practice that served as a tool for reflection and healing. Transferring them onto the physical structure of the bed creates a dialogue between interior experience and external form, making visible the unseen work of processing trauma.

This work stems from both personal experience and the broader cultural reckoning sparked by the Me Too movement. Through dismantling the bed, both literally and metaphorically, I examine what remains, what must be let go, and what can be reclaimed. The resulting pieces function as quiet witnesses to transformation. They invite the viewer into a space where memory and material coexist, offering moments of recognition and resonance for those navigating their own journey of reclamation. – Gabi Madrid
