Cleo the Gallery is pleased to present A/C curated by Jeanette McCune with work by artists Adam Amram and Carolina Casusol at Atlanta Contemporary. This exhibition utilizes caricature to show two divergent portrayals of human experience.
Through the exaggerated forms of leaves fallen from trees, Amram’s sculptures take on frozen skeletal frames memorializing the bends and arcs inflicted upon each carcass. The metaphor of the body taking on its history of lived experience is exacerbated by the levels of color coating each subject. In these moments of depth Amram shows us that the pattern on each sculpture is evidence of a nuanced self and life lived, unique to each form.
Counter to Amram’s approach, Casusol delves into the entire parody of commerce summarizing cultural identity for easy consumption. Through using a commercial air freshener in the shape of a palm tree with the word “Exotica” at its base as her template for the work, Casusol exposes the tactic to generalize cultural backgrounds and further package populations of people with millions of variety of lived experience into simply “the other”. The repeat pattern of this facade along the wall is there to solidify her disclosure of the evidence to deplete the individual and forgo ethnology in favor of marketing one single romantic vision of divergence.

Adam Amram
Adam Amram (b. Haifa, Israel) earned a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD) in 2016. He has shown most recently with Mother Gallery (Beacon, NY), The de Young Fine Arts Museum (San Francisco, CA), Works On Paper Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Cleo the Gallery (Savannah GA), Harpy (Rutherford, NJ/ Brooklyn, NY), Melanie Flood Projects + Adams and Ollman Gallery (Portland, OR), and Resort (Baltimore, MD). Amram is represented by Mother Gallery. He is currently living in New Haven CT where he is pursuing an MFA at the Yale School of Art in Painting and Printmaking.
Carolina Casusol
Carolina Casusol (b. Lima, Peru) holds an MFA from Tulane University and a BFA from Corriente Alterna Art School, in partnership with San Marcos University, where she graduated with honors in 2011. Casusol received the Summer Merit Fellowship award from Tulane University and was a Nominated Candidate for CIFO Grands & Commissions Program in 2017. She was selected as an artist in residency for the Summer Art Program 2021 in the Bakehouse Art Complex (Miami, Fl), where now she works as a permanent artist in residency. Casusol’s recent practice explores the inevitable intersections in culture, language, and identity. Her artwork deals with historic issues of transition and displacement through various media, including installations, drawings, and photography. She has presented work in over 15 solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Peru, and Argentina. And was selected to be part of the first edition of the Immigrant Artist Biennial in NYC (2020) and recently received the Miami Artists Stipend Program award 2022. Carolina Casusol lives and works in Miami, FL.
