As a photographer, filmmaker, and live visual artist (she is a member of celebrated psychedelic outfit the Joshua Light Show), Denny is a shaper of light. In her series Photon Motion, the New York-based artist offers hypnotically meditative explorations of light and time by capturing the abstract play of light sources as they are refracted through motorized glassware. Referencing other media from light art to stained glass to abstract painting, these works were originally shown as part of Off the Wall @ 725 Ponce’s launch in August and September 2023.

About Off the Wall @ 725 Ponce

The largest movie screen in the Southeast, illuminating Atlanta's Beltline Trail with film and video art from around the world. Curated by Gregory Zinman. This exhibition was made possible with the support of Emory University’s Arts and Humanistic Inquiry initiative.

Bios

Alyson Denny

Alyson Denny creates abstract photographic images of intricately manipulated

light. Her light-altering techniques include motorized refractors, programmed

LEDs, hand-painted colorants, and digitally die-cut apertures, all used to

generate immersive, luminous, motion-filled worlds.

Her moving images were featured as part of the inaugural screenings of Off the

Wall @ 725 Ponce in Atlanta GA, and recently appeared as the grand finale of

the University of Maryland’s NextNOW Fest. Two works were commissioned for

residential installations in New York City, and her piece Half & Half & Honey now

resides permanently in the lobby of Radian Boston’s residential tower.

In May of 2024 she mixed her moving image visuals live for the first time with

Slow Fawn, a music project of Sam Cohen. Two of her moving images are

currently looping on the digital covers of his latest albums, Slow Fawn Music

No. 1 and No. 2.

Since 2008 Alyson has been a member of the legendary Joshua Light Show.

She has performed everything from the iconic liquid light to state-of-the-art VJ

projections, working with an eclectic group of musicians including Terry Riley,

Lou Reed, John Zorn, MGMT, and Oneohtrix Point Never.

Alyson studied physics and filmmaking at Harvard. She is currently on the

faculty of the School of Visual Arts, NYC, where she teaches Light Lab, a course

she designed to explore the artistic potential of experimental lighting in

photography and video
