Insides
Stone’s stop motion animation, Headwaters (2022), recalls floodwaters invading and receding, rising sea levels and melting icecaps, broken levees and ever-more destructive hurricanes. Wildfires and natural disasters echo through Dreamhouse’s (2024) illuminated, looping windows. The familiar architecture of the home is deconstructed and reconstructed through Insides' (2022) collision of 2D and stop motion animation. Stone’s works not only force us to rethink our relationship to the domestic sphere and natural environments, but also animate the Escher-like anxieties produced by our post-truth, echo-chambered, AI-generated digital world.
Bios
Kate Stone
Brooklyn-based Kate Stone constructs familiar, yet uncanny environments on the threshold between interior and exterior, the real and the supernatural, architecture and the body. A home, in her view, is never entirely comfortable. From overgrown carpets that consume their inhabitants to animated dollhouses that stride on stalactite legs, her work explores the domestic grotesque—a place of psychological contradictions and transformations.
